Companies linked to investment firm Ruane Cunniff have assembled more than 80,000 acres from Jacksonville to Panama City. The firm is now lobbying to make it easier to develop all that land.
Who runs Florida? Us or New York and Texas? This won't be "green housing". There is no such term as "smart development". None.Zero. Zippo.
BTW) Supply and demand have very little to do with real pricing. Mostly, it's a gaslighting excuse to price gouge.
In Florida, the Lennar Corp. is being sued as a class action winding its way through court because they couldn't sell houses for inflated prices. It's back to the old scam. Fraudulent mortgage origination loans and paperwork. And, NO it's not the homeowners fault. It never was ~
The Best Way to Rob a Bank is to Own One by William Bill Black. There are plenty of empty houses in Florida. They are not affordable and empty or 3rd homes etc. Appraisal fraud people - did you not learn anything from 2008???? Seriously, people!!!!! eye roll...
Of course thereโs no discussion about development paying for necessary infrastructure - roads, utilities, schools etc. Florida used to have reasonably effective Comprehensive Plans - developed locally and reviewed by Tallahassee - that required communities to plan for their own growth. No more. Tallahassee wants to run everything, but take no responsibility for consequences.
The stars are aligning nicely for Jennifer Lee and associates with Sen. Duggan set to be a major player in the Legislature this term.
As for the sellers: Time to make their millions and relax on their laurels, clipping coupons and whatever else millionaires do; ditto their heirs. (There are a million millionaires in the US today.)
As for the buyers: 60 percent land set aside as a "reserve" seems attractive and it's past time for the population to move off the oceanfront and northward to higher ground and, presumably, plenty of water. (And finally high speed internet will become available.)
150 years ago much of that same land belonged to the state of Florida, and crooked legislators divvied it up among speculators and Gilded Age millionaires. No reason to expect any difference this time around. (At some point taxpayers will pony up the money to claw back some of this land, even if it costs $8 million or so an acre.)
But, where is the building construction labor coming from?
Thank you for bringing this to light. How these legislators continue to win elections only indicates that no one in their districts is aware of what is actually happening-because local-regional news written by actual journalists is something that must be sought out. And when people are so busy trying to cobble a rent or insurance payment together or save their kids from ignorant education laws that they have no free time. Perfect storm for the lawless, corrupt, amoral billionaire class and the legislators they own.
What an incredible dig into where the money is really coming from. Many of us had wondered about potential connections to Chinese or other interests. You are simply an amazing researcher and reporter.
Florida being sold to the billionairesโฆ and the payback to DeSantis and Florida Republicans is just like what is happening in Washington under Trump. His family an billionaire tycoons, oil execs are getting paid back for donating to his campaign, ballroom, library, joining his sons 500,000 dollar club in Washington ( Don Jr the next grift) and Donaldโs 1 million dollar Maralago club in Florida and now we take running other countries into our hands. The guy could care less about our children and wants to send them to war. Yes a forever war .. Trump thinks he can run the world?!?! He canโt run shit!!!
He is a con artist, bully that has lawyers , NDAโs dirt on all his rapists friendsโฆ and he is the PIGGY!

I misspoke: The state's taxpayers paid Dee's campaign contributor $20 million per acre for 4 acres. Total=$80 million.
Ya know, I was wondering the same thing๐ค
