Introducing: Seeking Rents – The Podcast
Seeking Rents is launching a weekly pod. Plus some more site news, too.
This is Seeking Rents, a newsletter (and now a podcast, too!) devoted to producing original journalism — and lifting up the journalism of others — that examines the many ways that businesses influence public policy across Florida, written by Jason Garcia. Seeking Rents is free to all. But please consider a voluntary paid subscription, if you can, to support our work.
Seeking Rents is launching a new podcast.
The first episode of Seeking Rents — The Podcast will post tomorrow. It’ll tell the story of how Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature took billions of dollars from Florida consumers and gave it all to businesses — and how the governor kept everyone distracted while he did it.
This will be a weekly(ish) pod, and it’ll be delivered straight to your inbox if you already subscribe to the Seeking Rents newsletter. You’ll also be able to find it on podcast-streaming platforms like Apple and Spotify.
Episode 1 will pair with a new story posting later today that might surprise some folks: During his first four years in office, Ron DeSantis has raised taxes on Floridians. That’s according to a new Seeking Rents analysis of all the tax legislation that DeSantis has signed over the course of his first term.
To be sure, the Republican governor — and possible GOP presidential contender — has cut taxes overall. But that’s because he cut taxes so deeply for businesses that it masks the tax increases he imposed on consumers. Our story will walk you through the full analysis in detail, so you can see the numbers for yourself. This isn’t opinion. It’s math.
We’re also starting a YouTube channel, where you’ll be able to find captioned video episodes of each pod. Expect it to become home to more kinds of Seeking Rents content in the future, too. Subscribe to the channel here.
And lastly, in conjunction with the podcast launch, Seeking Rents will also start offering voluntary paid subscriptions. They are a way to show your support for the journalism we’re doing here, if you can. (They’re also a way to help us pay for public-records request, which, sadly, are often more expensive than they should be.)
But Seeking Rents is, and will remain, free to all. Regardless of whether you buy a subscription, you’ll still get full access to all of the journalism we produce. The goal around here is to illuminate and inform — and, hopefully, inspire action.
Thank for reading (and listening).
I am a property claims adjuster and constantly see the injustice and disregard for individuals by Florida big business and government. Keep on shining a light brother!
Thank you Jason for everything you are doing.
