Over and over again, I am reminded, call it more an involuntary evisceration, that what is happening in Florida is the "illusion of democracy".

If that term doesn't ring with you, think 1938 Germany.

Last week, the internet went down in our teeny, tiny RV park. Hmmmm... No worries. What does that have to do with the "illusion of democracy"? Glad you asked.

Seems that all the non-woke, racist, anti-government folks name their routers profane and disgusting things so they can congregate and foment online and in-person without the rest of us taking notice.

"Defund the FEDS", "F*ck the ATF" (by the way, there are 44 of these groups in Florida, https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/ideology/antigovernment).

And then, I go to pump my gas, and find a "take down the FEDS" sticker on the gas pump. Charming.

So, Republicans have basically been able to bring Washington to a standstill. Just wait for the next debt ceiling disaster, which has opened the door for "politicians" to take over control of the States.

If you think that this isn't 1938 Germany - you need to read up on how Hitler dismantled and eliminated democracy. It is absolutely terrifying.

We need to stop hiding under the illusion that this is fair and reasonable governing by a well-meaning, but maybe not our cup-of-tea politician sitting on the other side of the aisle. This is a controlled-burn of our human rights, at the most basic of levels.

I can no longer read the books of my choosing. I can no longer meet with people who engage in political dissent or open conversation. I can no longer freely join a union or organize against an employer who tries to exploit or devalue me. I am now intimidated by one man's personal police force...

And there is no outrage. We wimper. And shrug. And drive home to cower in silence.

Because no one will speak the truth - for fear of being burned at the stake by one man's political demagoguery. He is right when he says, "this is where woke comes to die." If you define woke as any form of dignity, human rights, individualism, or self-actuated thought, based on ethics and empathy. Then yes, I am in hell, and it is a death sentence for those of us in Florida who still have a soul.

How dare, one man, be allowed to proclaim that I have no right to exist in his hell.

I am furious, and sickened by what is happening here. But, I'll be damned if I am going to go down - without a fight.

I will write my tiny, pathetic little outrage and hope that one day - a child will find it here and take heart that we did not go down this path willingly.

This topic will explore how the Nazis managed to eliminate their opposition and consolidate ultimate power over Germany, whilst maintaining an illusion of democracy.

Very informative article. The "Free State of Florida" is nothing more than a campaign slogan.

So depressing to be among the oppressed citizens of Florida who are not extreme right in their thinking and behavior. DeSantis has gained excessive power enabling exploitation, marginalization as well as cultural imperialism. Democracy in our state is in serious jeopardy.

I am a new subscriber, having been enticed by the phrase "Seeking Rents." So far, I have not been disappointed. Beyond that, Seeking Rents has to be a must-read for anyone interested in watching how Governor DeSantis is building a constituency, based on reciprocal political gifts with his grifter friends in business, as he marches onward toward being the R nominee for President. I live in a Mid Atlantic state, am old enough to have voted against Richard Nixon twice, and I have to say that the political filth in Florida is breathtaking--and seemingly routine. WOW
