What is bizarre is that the public actually believes there isn't "enough people in Florida". That's insane and stupid economics education at it's best.
This is a seasonal economy. There is no way in hell anyone can make enough profit in 4 months and have a savings and pay for the 9 months of expenses. If they are honest, these small businesses have other locations in TN, KY, etc.
Workers deserve PAY (not tax cutting) and year around work. People leave all the time unless they want the punishment of debt.
The public keeps blaming Dems when they haven't had power in Tallahassee for more than 20 years. The last Dems Chair prior to Nikki Fried was a billionaire. He trashed it.
Housing is OVER appraised. But by now, no reporters talk about 2008 - do they ;0 even though it's part of the systemic failure of the Florida economy.
Jason, as always - we appreciate your reporting because there isn't local coverage anymore.
A few things: How does the State Attorney drop felony charges against Carolina Amesty? Was it because she completed a "diversion program" that included community service and a financial crimes course? Of course it was. White collar criminals get off easy once again. Mark my words, she'll be involved in some other nonsense later on.
KidCare and the Party of family values.....Just for laughs and maybe a cry, read up on the story of Florida versus children and their families fighting to get and maintain health coverage in the state of Florida. Once more Florida is soaking money from Florida taxpayers to protest and object keeping kids healthy by maintaining the very basic healthcare. Mind you, these protests don't happen when kids are still in the womb rather the state waits until they leave the womb. It is then that the state of Florida goes full battle mode trying to keep children from getting adequate healthcare. It's absolutely disgusting!!
Jason, I usually appreciate your takes on issues. But in this case, I do not see how you are willing to be on the side of Wall St. and US Chambers of Commerce. A famous economist once said "A nation can either have a generous social safety net, or open borders, but you can't have both." The US has chosen open borders over the generous social safety net. The reasons are obvious. Open borders benefit the wealthy.
I lived in Canada for seven years. Guess what? All the jobs there get done. They do NOT tolerate illegal immigration there. In fact, NO OTHER developed country in the world has open borders except the US. By "borders" I am not referring to the land border, but the essentially free-for-all, non-enforcement that we have here. ANYONE can fly in to the US on a tourist, student, or temporary work visa, and NEVER leave. How do you think we ended up with 20 million illegal immigrants in the country (according to a Yale study). The laws are NOT ENFORCED.
Why do you think that the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association wants Florida to bring in more immigrants? An unending supply of cheap labor keeps a downward pressure on wages! It’s Economics 101! You need ask yourself if this open borders system is such a great idea, why hasn’t Canada, Australia, or any of the European nations embraced it? I will tell you – workers there have more standing.
Please revisit this issue in your own mind. It is NOT that these businesses cannot get workers! I lived in Erie County, PA for many years. There is a low immigrant population there. The hotel maids, roofers, cook, servers, etc are almost all Americans. Americans will do ANY job if the pay is decent. It is simply bull cockie that these FL businesses cannot get workers. They want to pay next to nothing is the problem. Please stop siding with the Koch Brothers!
Most countries have Guest Worker programs. Workers are contracted by companies in accordance with official regulated government programs to work. They have rights and protections under laws and contracts. The contracts have end dates. Workers go home. They do not stay unless under a contract. They can apply for immigration and might get preference based of work history. That’s it. Either employers operate inside the law or break the law and hire, and likely abuse illegal’s to save money.
Why can’t employers work for actual programs that are fair and work instead of getting government to look the other way with BS permits.
It’s still not clear to me (a Democrat) exactly why the Biden administration decided that it was a good idea to open our borders to millions of unskilled, uneducated people. Allowing a relative small number of well educated in each year probability is acceptable. This was perhaps the most disastrous policy the country has seen in my long lifetime and I hope that the Republican Congress will grill those responsible to determine its origin. It undermined the wages of all workers and exacerbated our national housing crisis when we can’t house our own citizens. It consumed billions of our tax dollars which could have been put to better use. I still don’t understand those who say that we should not deport the vast majority of these interlopers. They violated our laws and continue to violate them and they should be removed. There’s no statute of limitations on this illegal behavior. No one believes that they have a right to move to Paris and live their life there without the permission of the French and no one would argue that the French had no right to kick their sorry asses out of that country. Why do the same rules not apply to the United States? Enough.
Dave, Biden didn't usher in millions of illegal immigrants. He was just following human rights groups' recommendations. Nowadays, when people come over the border, they are claiming asylum. It is essentially a way to get into the country legally, and then wait (years) for a hearing. Many of them never go the hearing, just blending into the underground economy. The illegal immigration problem in the US goes back many decades. It has been driven by politicians on the Left and The Right.
It wasn't just a Biden thing. There was a bi partisan plan to address and fix some issues. Trump canned it for his own glory. If American people can't afford a house, get a better job.

P.S. I am a Democrat.
What's the cost of living in Erie PA versus Orlando FL?
Please explain the point you are trying to make. That Florida needs illiegal immigration because the cost of living is so high? It doesn't follow.
