Honest question -- 117,000 sounds like a lot of homes owned by "corporate interests", but according to this site there are 3.8 million homes in the states ( https://www.infoplease.com/us/census/florida/housing-statistics ). Does a phenomenon that comprises only 3% of the housing market really make such a difference?

It's a great question. But I think it's more appropriate to think of the issue in terms of percentage of purchases (and the trend lines). For instance, this 2022 Harvard study (citing data from CoreLogic) found that investors accounted for nearly 30 percent of al single-family homes sold in the first quarter of 2022 -- compared to 16 percent of purchases between 2017 and 2019: https://www.jchs.harvard.edu/sites/default/files/reports/files/Harvard_JCHS_State_Nations_Housing_2022.pdf

As some of the stories and reports linked mention, another factor is that investor purchases tend to be more concentrated in specific local markets, meaning the overall averages can understate the impacts in many places.

Yup - and it's the ongoing chaos and results from 2008. They swooped in and started buying up houses at fire sales prices and forcing people into higher rent housing.

I'd love to take the Democrats on a house tour. See for yourself how many empty vacation and 2nd homes are in Florida

Are there any organizations writing laws that can be rubber stamped for individual state voter referendums? I live in Washington State where we can do state referendums and it would be amazing to have somewhat of a legal framework and what a sensible law would look like. I think we could get that on the ballot! My email address is changola@gmail.com
