The loss of sustainable careers is unfortunate, but the retail industry is losing over $60 BILLION per year to theft leading to store closings, especially in the inner-city. The ability to resell stolen goods on e bay and other online venues as well as the lack of enforcement does not discourage the crime. It's my opinion that when stolen goods retail for over $300 it is not "petty" and the offender deserves strict punishment .

Couple of points. First, the 2022 legislation discussed in the podcast eliminated any dollar value threshold whatsoever. So if you a dozen bags of chips you could get hit with a felony and a five-year prison sentence. We're not just talking about televisions and tablets.

Second, the retail industry's theft claims are....suspect. From a New York Times story just yesterday: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/08/business/organized-shoplifting-retail-crime-theft-retraction.html

Before I make a comment, I'll state that I'm not a trump fan nor a republican. I do believe in fair occupational license laws. I do believe in the public's health, wellness and safety. However, the statues have the effect of keeping mid life workers from a career change and obtaining licenser. It's a fact. The laws are too tight and the republicans use that argument to try to get rid of all of it.

Two important points. I do not see professionals "teaching" the younger generation. It didn't happen in the guilds of Europe and not now. There is no motivation because they will be your competition. Number two, the public schools should do a better job of teaching both academic, theory, and practical to prepare students to be licensed right out of school. Public schools in Florida have been demolished. That's another comment.

Additional requirements are red lining people out of licensure because they can't afford to work for slave wages as intern or slave wages as staff for the years of "experience" requirements. Which I can tell you is also exhortation. The employer will work you a 80 to 100 hour week holding his signature over the staff to sign off for your so called work experience. And, workers will not speak up because they do hope to get the golden license.

I hope the progressives, Democrats, etc will take note of this situation. Because, if not the republicans are making a good case for getting rid of all of it. That's not a good thing either. We need to find a common ground that avoids age discrimination and red lining out workers. Which I hope is the goal for Democrats, right?

Smiles,

I wonder how much stock the big box stores have in the private prison industry?
